Smoke Glacken’s top 2-year-old colt Western Smoke remained on fire this summer, winning his second consecutive stakes race on August 15th when he blazed to a 12 ½-length tour de force in the $100,000 Charles Town Juvenile.
A precocious gray colt with elite speed like his sire, Western Smoke found no competition in the seven-furlong race, springing from the gates on top and flashing an impressive pace. In a matter of a handful of strides, he had opened up a sizeable advantage that would increase to double-digit lengths by the time he hit the far turn.
Western Smoke and jockey Robby Albarado were just cruising turning for home as the colt switched leads on cue and romped to the one-sided victory as if he were in a race of his own. The final time was a crisp one – 1:24.99 over a fast local main track – and Western Smoke earned a 92 Beyer Speed Figure, making him the only 2-year-old colt to earn two Beyers in the 90s so far this season. His 94 Beyer earned when winning last month’s Prairie Meadows Juvenile still holds as the co-fastest Beyer recorded by a 2-year-old colt in 2009.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, Western Smoke has proven to be one of the best juveniles in North America with three wins from five starts, including his latest pair of stakes wins by a combined 19 ¼ lengths. He has now earned $136,687 for owners Kirk and Judy Robison.
Out of the Boston Harbor mare Echo Harbor, Western Smoke was bred in Kentucky by Hopewell Investments LLC.
