MAIDEN MARES OVER 731 DAYS OF AGE AT TIME OF IMPORTATION or
MARES IMPORTED FROM COUNTRIES NOT KNOWN TO BE AFFECTED WITH CEM
These mares are not routinely quarantined by The Division of Animal Health. However, they must meet the following testing and treatment requirements prior to entering a Kentucky Breeding shed.
Obtain 2 sets of cultures for CEM from the clitoral fossa & clitoral sinuses. The second set of cultures should be obtained at least 72 hours after the first set.
Obtain one sample from the endometrium for CEM culture.
The first three mares bred to the same stallion following any import mare must have CF blood drawn within 15-25 days post-breeding. Proof that the CF blood has been drawn must accompany mares returning for a second heat. CF results are mandatory if mare is to be doubled on the second heat or if returning for a third heat.
The imported mares must be bred last in line and prophylactically scrubbed before cover.
MARES IMPORTED FROM COUNTRIES LISTED BY THE USDA AS BEING AFFECTED BY CEM
A quarantine release must accompany the mare on initial cover. No doubles on the first heat.
Obtain a swab from the endometrium for CEM culture. This swab may be obtained with either set of swabs required during quarantine, or in the case of a pregnant mare, this swab should be collected after foaling.
The first three mares bred to the same stallion following an import mare are required to have CF
blood drawn 15 to 25 days post-breeding.
The imported mares must be bred last in line and prophylactically scrubbed before cover.
All tests required on mares being bred to Gainesway stallions in 2008 may be processed in labs other than the University of Kentucky Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center as long as they are approved by the Office of the Kentucky State Veterinarian.
